Central and northern coastal provinces are bracing themselves for a powerful tropical storm, which is moving towards the East Sea.

At 13.00 on July 13, Conson was located at around 220km east and south-east of Luzon island of the Philippines, packing winds of between 103-117km/h near its centre, according to the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Centre.

In the next 24 hours Conson is forecast to move between west and north-west at a speed of 25km/h and strengthen further. On July 14, it will enter the eastern part of the East Sea, with winds gusting 113km/h at its centre.

The storm is causing strong winds and rough seas in the eastern and northern parts of the East Sea.

In an urgent telegram issued on July 13, the Ministry of Health asked departments of health of coastal provinces from Phu Yen to Quang Ninh to be well prepared for the storm.
