Hanoi will build as many as 15,500 flats with a total area of 1.5 million m2 for low-income earners between now and 2015, according to Do Xuan Anh, Director of the Municipal Department of Construction.

The information was released on August 28 at a workshop on housing for students, industrial park workers, and other low-income earners.

Nguyen Trong Ninh, an official from the Ministry of Construction, said the government has earmarked VND625 billion for this project. However, he emphasized that if Hanoi fails to disburse the project’s capital within the next four months, it will be channelled to other localities.

The project aims to meet the housing demand for 60 percent of students at training establishments and 50 percent of workers at industrial zones.

Hanoi’s existing dormitories satisfy only 15-20 percent of student demand. More serious still, five percent of local households are in urgent need of housing.
