A road traffic safety week will be launched in all 64 provinces and cities from April 23-29 in an effort to reduce the number of traffic accidents and casualties.

The event will be jointly conducted by the National Committee for Traffic Safety and relevant agencies in response to the first United Nations Global Road Traffic Safety Week.

The move aims to encourage motorbike drivers to wear helmets and observe traffic regulations.

According to the National Committee for Traffic Safety, nearly 15,000 traffic accidents were reported in Vietnam last year, killing 13,000 people and injuring 11,000 others.

Road accidents accounted for 94 percent of the accidents, followed by those on railways and waterways.
