Four meetings of political, economic, cultural, social and organizational committees were held at the 31st General Assembly of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) on September 22.

At the meetings, ASEAN parliamentarians analyzed programmes, goals, opportunities and challenges in building a prosperous ASEAN community by 2015.

During the Political Committee, delegates discussed the resolution of regional and global security, calling on AIPA to cooperate with ASEAN to ensure peace and security in the region. They also highlighted the ASEAN Defence Minister Meeting Plus (ADMM+) as well as the upcoming meetings of ASEAN security agencies in Hanoi.

During the Economics Committee, delegates discussed a draft resolution on the role of parliamentarians in the global post-economic crisis period. They also made recommendations to urge AIPA members to strengthen cooperation for economic recovery and promoting investment as well as transferring technologies to help member nations reduce the impact of climate change and prevent natural disasters. They also encouraged parliamentarians to play an active role in sustainable development.

In the spirit of mutual understanding, respect and trust, ASEAN parliamentarians also devised measures to solve difficulties in promoting cooperation among regional nations. They also paid a special attention to new initiatives to reform more productive operation mechanisms as well as measures to strengthen the role of AIPA in inter-parliamentary diplomacy.
