Prioritising worker skill improvement

(VOV) -A World Bank official has said worker skill improvements should be prioritised in the reform strategy seeking to make Vietnam an industrial country by 2020.

Addressing a seminar in Hanoi on August 23, World Bank (WB) Human Resources Coordinator Christian Bodewg stressed Vietnam needs to raise the capacity of all employees, especially younger labourers to a level capable of meeting its industrialisation process’s demands.

He noted employers require workers with diverse skill sets, proficient at presentations, inspections, equipment use, and flexible problem solving.

Nguyen Minh Thao, Deputy Head of the Central Institute for Economic Management’s (CIEM) Business Environment Department, said many of Vietnam’s vocational training centres have yet to live up to business expectations. More than half of locally graduating trainees need additional training to reach acceptable competency.

She said most Vietnamese workers lack knowledge of foreign languages and suffer from underdeveloped soft skills like emotional intelligence and communication. Many businesses are forced to put newly-recruited workers through trial runs before officially employing them.

Thao suggested vocational training schools work closely together with businesses to ensure trainees cultivate the necessary skills and choose appropriate career paths.
