Currently, the mass media have not yet considered gender equality as a priority issue in their activities. Since 2002, there has been very little information available and very little done, according to the results from a survey on communications and gender equality.

The survey has been conducted by the Centre for Research and Scientific Application on Gender, Family, Women and Adolescents (SCAGA) and Oxfam from the UK.

Ms Le Thi Kim Dung, Oxfam’s programme officer said information programmes have stressed on the importance of gender equality but the message is still not getting through. Therefore, there is an urgent need for strategic cooperation on gender equality issues with the mass media.

According to the survey, even communications agencies at central level have not yet had the guidelines and policies for gender equality issues delivered to them.

Ms Le Thi Hong Giang, a member of the research team from SCAGA said that to conduct communications activities successfully, there needs to be co-ordination from organisations specialising in gender equality and the relevant news agencies.
