Petroleum Technical Services’ Phu My Port in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province welcomed its maiden ship - the Legend of the Sea from the Bahamas - in its inaugural ceremony on February 6.

The port will now receive cargo ships with dead weight tonnage (DWT) from 30,000 to 50,000 tonnes.

The construction of the US$31.2 million port is part of the country’s master plan for sea port development up to 2010.

The main role of the port is to service Phu My fertilizer plant and to facilitate oil and gas imports and exports to the country.

In the first phase, from 2003 to 2004, a 300 to 500 tonne capacity wharf was built to service Phu My fertilizer plant.

During the second phase, from 2007 to 2009, a wharf 12.3m deep was built to receive ships with a DWT of 30,000 to 50,000 tonnes.

Later this year, a port complex with warehouses and offices will be operational.
