Dang Ngoc Tung, member of the Party Central Committee and Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL), has been elected the President of VGCL.

The election was made at the eighth conference of the VGCL's Executive Committee in Hanoi on December 28.

At the two-day conference, the VGCL reviewed trade union activities in 2006 and discussed tasks for 2007 and preparation work for the tenth Trade Union Congress scheduled to be held in the fourth quarter of 2008.

In 2007, the VGCL will speed up its programme to admit one million more members from all economic sectors and focus its priorities on establishing grass-root trade unions in the private and foreign-invested sectors.

Trade union congresses will be held during the second half of 2007 at the grass root levels and will be completed in the second quarter of 2008 in the central, city and provincial levels and at the VGCL's affiliate members, said the conference.
