Vietnam has announced a list of a 54-strong sports team, led by Secretary General of the Vietnam Olympic Committee Hoang Vinh Giang, to participate in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Twenty-one out of them are athletes who have been qualified to compete in nine events including taekwondo, wushu, table tennis, weightlifting, badminton, gymnastics, shooting, athletics and swimming.

The most hopeful of securing medals at the World’s biggest sporting event are in taekwondo, weightlifting and badminton.

Significantly, taekwondo martial artist Tran Thi Ngoc Truc will replace her teammate Hoang Ha Giang at the event due to Giang’s health. She was said to have been infected by a kind of virus during her training in the Republic of Korea.

A ceremony to see the team off will be held in Hanoi on August 1.
