Despite periods of bad weather, Vietnam’s rice output for 2010 is expected to reach more than 39 million tonnes, according to a report released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on September 16.

Representatives from the ministry said that by September, Vietnam had exported over five million tonnes of rice to earn US$2.14 billion, at an average price of US$424.24 per tonne.

Vietnam’s rice exports are now almost the same price as Thailand’s. The country’s rice exports have not only secured a foothold in traditional markets such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Cuba and Iraq but also penetrated new ones, including Africa.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade stated that the management of exported rice must be flexible to ensure consumption, maintain the price of domestic rice, purchase all of the farmers’ rice, and ensure food security and stable food prices.
