Relations between China and the US are at a ‘crucial stage’ linking the past to the future, said Chinese President Hu Jintao while receiving US Secretary of State Condolleezza Rice in Beijing on June 30.

“Whatever changes take place in the US and the international situation, our guideline of developing constructive, cooperative relations with the US remains unchanged,” said Mr Hu.

He pledged to work with the US to enhance dialogue and exchange based on mutual respect, equality, reciprocity and prosperity to promote trust and cooperation and push forward the healthy development of Sino-US relations.

“Furthering the Sino-US relationship conforms to the fundamental interests of the two countries and their people, and it has a profound impact on the pace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region and the world,” said the Chinese President.

Ms Rice said that President George W. Bush is expected to meet Mr Hu during the upcoming G8 summit in Japan. She said Mr Bush will continue to promote cooperation with China in bilateral issues as well as in six-party talks and other issues.

Mr Hu reaffirmed China’s stance on the Taiwan issue while Ms Rice said the US adheres to the one-China policy.

While in Beijing, Ms Rice met with Premier Wen Jiabao and State Councilor Dai Bingguo.
