Ha Long Bay cruise ship bursts into flame

(VOV) -Around 18 passengers and five crewmembers were left scrambling to safety as flames ripped through a cruise ship on Ha Long Bay on April 10.

The cruise ship, named QN3736 of Cuu Long Co. Ltd., burst into flames around 10am on its return from a one-day journey to Trong Mai island on Ha Long Bay.

With smoke and flames billowing around them the passengers and crewmembers pulled out their lifejackets and plunged into the water and attempted to swim to safety.

Police and rescue officials rescued the 15 foreign and three Vietnamese passengers, safely plucking them from the waters. No loss of human life or serious injury has been reported.

According to Senior Lieutenant Colonel Dang Van Thinh, Head of the Marine Police Office in Quang Ninh province, the primary cause of the accident has been attributed to an electrical short in the cooking area.

Local authorities and relevant agencies are currently conducting further investigations into the case.

Part of the ship was destroyed, but all people on board have been evacuated thanks to timely rescue efforts.
