ASEAN contest winners announced in Hanoi

An awards ceremony for the “ASEAN Community of Solidarity and Prosperity” contest was held at the National Broadcasting Centre in Hanoi on July 19 by the Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV).

The ceremony was part of the 43rd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM) and related meetings which are being held in Hanoi from July 15-23.

The contest was launched by the VOV and the National Committee for ASEAN from February 8 to June 15 with the aim of helping Vietnamese people get a thorough grasp of ASEAN, and its programmes and plans.

Five months after its initial announcement, the organising board received strong responses from listeners at home and abroad with thousands of entries.

Hoang Minh Nguyet, VOV’s deputy general director, said the contest met the increasing demand for understanding of ASEAN and radio was the best way to bring ASEAN information to listeners from near and far, including those from China and Laos.

Bui Thanh Son, deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, said the contest was of great significance, starting communication activities during Vietnam’s ASEAN chairmanship and the 15th anniversary of Vietnam’s ASEAN membership.

At the awards ceremony, ASEAN General Secretary Suri Pitsuwan praised Vietnam’s role as the ASEAN president over the past six months and emphasised the contest helped people gain a better understanding of ASEAN.

The organising board presented one first, two second, three third and five consolation prizes to winners.

*** After the ceremony, VOV General Director Vu Van Hien, held a meeting with ASEAN General Secretary Surin Pitsuwan, briefing his guest on VOV’s activities and development plans in the future. They also discussed the establishment of an ASEAN Press Association.
