US giant Lockheed Martin will build Vietnam's first satellite worth approximately US$180 million, according to an official from the Ministry of Post and Telematics, who refused to identify his name.
Under the contract signed on May 12, the satellite named Vinasat will be launched into the orbit before the second quarter of 2008 to keep the orbital position it booked years ago with the International Telecommunications Union. The satellite, which is expected to operate for 15 years, will help transmit audio-visual and civil aviation signals to remote and mountainous areas in Vietnam.
