Zither performers from China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan (China) gathered in Ho Chi Minh City for the second Asian Zither Festival which began on September 1.

Nguyen Thi Hai Phuong, who won the first prize of Vietnam’s first National Zither Competition in 1992, Pham Tra My from the National Music Academy and Mai Thi Hong Nga from the Hue Music Academy, represent the host country to the festival.

Also present at the event are Professors Tran Van Khe and Quang Hai, who have worked for years to preserve and promote Vietnamese zither.

The participants bring their best traditional music to the four-day festival, with the aim of enlivening and preserving the traditional musical instrument of Asia.

The zither is called dan tranh or dan thap luc (16-chord zither) in Vietnam. It is known as koto in Japan, kayagum and komungo in Korea and guzheng in Singapore.

The first Asian Zither Festival was held in 2000.
