Senior leaders greet Panamanian President

(VOV) - Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung received President of Panama Ricardo Alberto Martinelli Berrocal in Hanoi on October 25.

Meeting with Party leader Trong, the Panamanian President informed him the outcome of his talks with President Truong Tan Sang, adding that his visit will give fresh impetus to elevating bilateral cooperation in economics, trade and investment on a par with the political and diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Mr Trong and his guest agreed to promote exchange activities and share experiences between their respective ruling parties and legislative bodies in the near future.

At the reception for President Berrocal, PM Dung underlined the need to take effective measures to enhance more comprehensive cooperation between the two countries, especially in economics, trade, investment and tourism.

He proposed the immediate signing of the Vietnam-Panama trade and investment cooperation agreement and the establishment of a government committee for scientific and technological cooperation.

PM Dung asked Panama to support peace, stability and maritime freedom in the East Sea on the basis of respect for international law.

The Panamanian President said he will do his utmost to join hands with Vietnam to effectively implement cooperation areas as proposed by PM Dung, particularly the early signing of the Vietnam-Panama trade and investment cooperation agreement by the end of this year.

Panama is also willing to cooperate and share experiences with Vietnam in its areas of expertise such as sea ports and quay building.

The two countries should further cooperate in education and training through the exchange of students, teachers and lecturers to reinforce solidarity and mutual understanding, President Berrocal said.

Speaking to the Panamanian leader, NA Chairman Hung called on the two nations to work closely on raising bilateral trade turnover and boosting cooperation in agriculture, science and technology, culture and healthcare.

Mr Hung praised Panama for setting up the Vietnam-Panama Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group for the 2012-2013 term, saying that their respective legislative bodies should launch cooperation activities in the near future and coordinate more closely at multilateral forums in which they are both members.

The NA leader also took the occasion to convey an invitation to his Panamanian counterpart to visit Vietnam in the near future.
