The first APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting (̣SOM 1) entered its sixth working day on February 25 with the meetings of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation Development  (OECD) Economic Committee, the Group on Services (GOS), the Informal Experts Group on Business Mobility (IEGBM), the STAR 4 (the fourth conference on Secure Trade in the APEC region, and an anti-corruption workshop.

Dr Kyung Tae Lee, Chairman of the APEC Secretariat said at a press briefing that the Economic Committee (EC) is one of the pivotal committees of APEC, which is assigned to analyse economic issues in the region. During the three-day EC meeting, delegates discussed the implementation of APEC, and OECD agreements on economic reforms.

Economic reforms are essential to all the APEC economies in which Vietnam is actively involved this process, Mr. Kyung noted.

GOS discussed trade and service issues relating to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiation process while the anti-corruption workshop addressed the anti-corruption and transparency issues which are key to medium and small sized enterprises.

Regarding anti-corruption activities in Vietnam, Mr Christopher Burton who chaired the workshop said that anti-corruption is one of Vietnam’s priority areas. Vietnam should effectively implement its anti-corruption commitments under the APEC framework as the country is delegated to lead a group on anti-corruption and transparency, he said.
