Myanmar, Thailand pledge to reinforce relations

Myanmar state advisor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi and Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai vowed to promote the countries’ relations in all sectors during their meeting in Nay Pyi Taw on May 9.

Aung San Suu Kyi said Pramudwinai's visit to Myanmar is beneficial to both countries.

The officials discussed an array of important issues, including Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand, the development of the Dawei Special Economic Zone in the southeast of Myanmar, and cooperation in developing border areas.

They also touched upon mutual visits made by the countries’ leaders in the future.

At a joint press conference after the meeting, Pramudwinai said there are 1.59 million registered Myanmar workers in Thailand, adding that their next generation is enjoying education and healthcare rights like Thai citizens.

Suu Kyi said not only the Thai Government is responsible for the migrant workers in Thailand, so does the Myanmar government.

Also on May 9, the Thai minister met with Myanmar President Htin Kyaw, saying that Thailand wants to discuss bilateral cooperation methods with Myanmar at the Russia – ASEAN Summit, which will be held soon in the East European nation.

Pramudwinai, a special envoy of Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-Cha, arrived in the neighbouring country on May 8 for a two-day visit to mull over measures enhancing bilateral partnership.
