Kai-Tak storm leaves three dead, six missing
Three people have been reported dead and six others missing after Kai-Tak storm hit the country late afternoon on August 17.
In Hanoi, heavy rains and strong winds uprooted a number of large trees in Hanoi, some of which fell onto two cars, killing one person and injuring another. Many streets were also left under 150 - 200cm of water.
The Hanoi Green Trees - Park Company has arranged its staff to be on duty around the clock.
*** The storm also swept away 23 aquaculture floats in Mong Cai, Quang Ninh province, at 9pm on August 17, and the authorities had to rescue 41 people from the floats.
Quang Ninh cut the electricity supply in Dam Ha and Hai Ha districts, and Mong Cai and Ha Long cities, which were experiencing heavy rains and powerful winds. However, communication systems remained operational.
The Quang Ninh provincial People’s Committee urged localities to follow the development of the storm closely and brace for dangerous conditions.
Nearly 600 tourist boats and all fishing vessels were safely sheltered and all tours on Ha Long Bay were cancelled to ensure tourist safety.
*** The storm produced heavy rains across much of northern Phu Tho province. More than 10 houses and many classrooms were damaged, dozens of hectares of crops were submerged and nearly a hectare of commercial plants and fruit trees were broken apart. Three electricity supply poles also collapsed.
Local authorities are helping people overcome the damages as quickly as possible and asking them to implement response measures to minimize losses.
Heavy rains and strong winds in Yen Bai province caused hundreds of houses to collapse and lose their roofs. Rescue efforts faced a number of difficulties as the storm occurred late in the day and in dangerous areas. Local authorities have now mobilized resources for evacuating people to safer areas.
On August 18, the Central Hydrometeorological Broadcasting Centre said that the storm is weakening to a low pressure system after travelling deep inland.
It forecasts that the storm will continue moving west at 20-25km per hour, weakening steadily before it is completely over.
