Many foreign media agencies in their April 19 editions carried articles on the second day of the 10th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV).

Major newspapers in Laos such as Pathet Laos, Passason, Vientiane May and KPL news agency ran articles and photos on the opening session of the Congress. Pathet Laos fronted the Lao People's Revolutionary Party's congratulatory message to the CPV's 10th National Congress.

Earlier, Lao National Television and major newspapers published many articles on the preparation of the Congress and showcased the socio-economic achievements of Vietnam during its 20 years of Doi Moi (Renewal) process.

Thailand's Bangkok Post said that Hanoi is billowing with red banners and the national flags as a salute to the Congress. The paper quoted Vietnamese leaders as saying at the opening session of the Congress that the Party is determined to enhance its leadership and combativeness and to fight corruption as well.

Meanwhile, Thailand's Business Day said Vietnam is speeding up its renewal process in order to get the country out of its underdeveloped status.

Major newspapers in Indonesia such as the Compass and Jakarta Post carried articles about the CPV's 10th National Congress, highlighting the Party's determination to fight corruption and wastefulness.

Newspapers in Japan such as Yomiuri, Sankei, Nihon Keizai, Asahi, Akahata and Japan Times also covered the opening session of the Congress. They quoted the CPV's Political Report highlighting achievements made by Vietnam during its Renewal process. Vietnam has the highest national economic growth rate in Southeast Asia.

The country continues to carry out its reform polices and develop its socialist-oriented market economy, striving to average the economic growth rate to 8 percent per year in the next five years in an effort to double its 2000 GDP by 2010. It has also affirmed its determination to continue carrying out  the foreign policy of openness, multilateralisation and diversification of international relations, the Japanese newspapers said.

Many US websites also published articles about the CPV's 10th National Congress, affirming the Party's leading role in the fight against corruption.
