Ho Chi Minh City received more than 1 million foreign visitors over the past five months, a year-on-year increase of 10 percent, according to the Municipal Tourism Department.

In May alone, the city served 175,000 foreign visitors, an increase of 10.9 percent from a year ago. Most of visitors came from Australia, Japan, the US and the Republic of Korea.


The department says it earned VND8.5 trillion from tourism services in five months, a year-on-year rise of 40 percent.


An estimated 50,000 local tourists went on outbound tours in May, mainly to Cambodia, China, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.


Meanwhile, Hanoi welcomed more than 3 million visitors during the five-month period, including 657,000 foreigners, and generated nearly VND8.2 trillion.


The General Statistics Office reported that the country has so far this year received 1.8 million foreign visitors, a year-on-year rise of 12.4 percent.
