Key economic region urged to deal with urbanization

(VOV) - The planning and development of the southern key economic zone was discussed at a seminar held in HCM City on October 23 by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the World Bank (WB) and Vietnam National University-HCM City.

Participants discussed regional co-ordination to promote the economy and fully tap each locality’s potential, develop green urban areas and sustainable growth.

Experts said with the rapid urbanization, Vietnam and the region have been facing a number of challenges of urban development such as traffic congestion, and environmental degradation.

UN-Habitat Director Nguyen Quang said the region should accelerate the economy in an innovative way to promote green growth, reduce carbon emission and save energy and develop clean production and industry.

He asked localities in the region should co-ordinate to fully utilize each locality’s advantages and enhance competitive edge for the common development.
