As many as 377 Japanese candidates began campaigning for the Upper House polls on July 12, an increase of 57 candidates compared to the 2004 polls.

Half the Upper House seats (121/242) will be elected on the July 29 polls.

In Tokyo, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called on voters to support him and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party so that he would have the power to carry out reforms. PM Abe’s ruling coalition currently controls the house.

During the electoral campaigns, parties will present their opinions on the wage system for pensioners, ways to narrow economic gaps between prefectures, and the possibility of amending the constitution.
