The Vietnam National UNESCO Committee held a ceremony in Hanoi on October 27 to commemorate the date Hanoi was awarded “The City for Peace” title by UNESCO ten years ago.

At the ceremony, the Chairman of Hanoi City People’s Committee, Nguyen The Thao, emphasised that the “City for Peace” is an honourary title granted by the international community to Hanoi for its contributions to the struggle for peace.

Mr Thao also conveyed a message to international friends about a Hanoi with a history of 1,000 years, a peaceful, dynamic city on the right track of development along with its elegant people. Hanoi is continually making great efforts for peace in the world, as a firm foundation for development, prosperity and integration.

The UNESCO General Assembly recently agreed to get involved in organizing a grand ceremony to mark the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi in 2010, a great honour for the capital city.

Cuban ambassador to Vietnam Fredesman Turro Gonzalez said he loves this city like his homeland and has lived here for more than 20 years. He added that despite difficulties and hardship in the war, Hanoians have always been optimistic and had a firm trust in the future. Hanoi today is making great efforts to deserve its title “City for Peace”, actively contributing to the common struggle of nations for peace in the world.
