If the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho can preserve the landscape ecology of its rivers and canals while it continues to develop for the future, it will become a very attractive tourist destination with floating markets, river wharfs and ferries that are second to none in the region.

Despite having been recognised as a centrally-run city in 2004, Can Tho remains a young city compared to other central cities. The city is, therefore, required to work out a long-term strategy aimed at meeting criteria in terms of urban construction and population development in terms of the first class city. Under the master plan for city development from now till 2025, Can Tho will focus on building international routes, and upgrading infrastructure facilities to help the city gain momentum for rapid development.

Furthermore, priority will be given to expanding the Tra Noc airport into an international airport, and to building national highways to facilitate trading and the exchange of goods among nearby provinces. The focus will be on upgrading and developing infrastructure facilities in townships and districts to create links between the city centre and suburban areas. The master-plan (till 2025) also mentions the transformation of Can Tho into a modern and civilised city worthy of its role as an economic engine of the region and capital city of the Mekong Delta.

A big question about orientations for development of Can Tho City remains open?

According to Deputy Minister of Construction Tran Ngoc Chinh, during the construction process, Can Tho should design suitable projects for waterway-featured economic development. Can Tho has the Hau River and is criss-cross with hundreds of canals. For that reason, urban areas in the city should be developed alongside the rivers and canals. If Can Tho makes the best of its advantage, it will swiftly become an original city in the Southeast Asia.

Prof. architect Nguyen The Ba, Deputy Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Urban Planning and Development says that Can Tho’s planning work must go along with the master planning of the Mekong River Delta. Apart from becoming a dynamic centre in the region, Can Tho should make the most of its own characteristics and advantages to develop into an ecological city. Can Tho must be a beautiful city as it is located near one of the most modern bridges in Vietnam and the region crossing the large Hau Giang river. Can Tho City must be so charming and beautiful that one only needs to come here once, and will remember it forever.

Architect Luu Trong Hai shared the view by giving a more specific solution: “Good sceneries of rivers, canals and floating villages and markets are “specialities” which are uneasily owned by other cities. It is essential to consider these special characteristics
when setting orientations for development of landscape architecture and construction models. It should not build high-rise buildings the one next to the other, but there should be garden house models placed on main rivers. Houses near riversides should be lower than those inside and will become increasingly higher as they come closer to the city centre. However, it is important to build a number of high rise buildings in order to create the city’s own landscape architecture. Some people are very optimistic to say that if the planning work is implemented properly, Can Tho will look like Vietnam’s version of Venice or Amsterdam.
