PM Dung meets with Dutch parliament

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung met with President of the Dutch Senate Gerdi Verbeet and Vice President of the Dutch House of Representatives Kim-Putters on September 28.

Addressing the meeting, PM Dung affirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to strengthening ties of friendship and cooperation with the Netherlands in all fields, especially priority areas such as coping with climate change, water resource management, agriculture, seaport, oil and petrol, and logistics services.

Mr Dung asked the Dutch parliament, Gerdi Verbeet and Kim Putters to support cooperation programmes between the Netherlands and Vietnam.

He also expressed his pleasure at the growing ties between the Vietnam National Assembly and the States-General of the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, President of the Dutch Senate Gerdi Verbeet and Vice President of the Dutch House of Representatives Kim-Putters said they considered Mr Dung’s visit to the Netherlands a new landmark in the multifaceted relation of friendship and cooperation for mutual benefits between the two countries.

Ms Verbeet stressed that the Dutch people always support the Vietnamese people in their past struggle for national independence as well as in their current process of national construction and development. The Dutch parliament supports the promotion of the strategic partnership agreement between the two countries on coping with climate change and managing water resources as well as on boosting cooperation in education, medicine, and developing young generations, she said.

During his stay in the Netherlands, PM Dung also met with Professor Cees Veerman, who is Advisor for the Vietnamese PM on climate change, flood control and water resources management, and the Mayor of Amsterdam, Eberhard van der Laan.

During the meeting with former Dutch Minister for Agriculture Veerman, PM Dung stressed that Vietnam regards adapting to climate change a matter of life and death for the country, and is mobilizing all social resources to carry out this task.

Professor Veerman said that the Dutch side has sent its experts to Vietnam to study climate change in the Mekong Delta. The Netherlands will join Vietnam in forming a working party to research and effectively implement projects.

The Dutch professor said the Netherlands wants to transfer its experience and technology in water resources management to Vietnam and he will cooperate with Vietnam’s relevant agencies to work out a sustainable development vision for the Mekong Delta in the next 100 years.

Meeting with the Amsterdam mayor, Mr Dung suggested Mr van der Laan encourage big companies in the city to boost investment in Vietnam’s finance, banking and petrol and oil sectors.
