Vietnam’s top table tennis player Doan Kien Quoc left Hanoi for Beijing on August 15.

Quoc, who qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games after winning the regional Olympic qualifiers in Singapore earlier this year, will meet David Zalcherg from Australia who ranks 438th in the world, in the men’s singles on August 19.

Placed 222nd in the world, he was known as the only Southeast Asian representative at the Athens Olympics four years ago.

Quoc won a bronze medal at the 21st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia in 2001.

Vietnam sent a sports team of 21 athletes to Beijing Olympics, but the country’s only silver medal was won by weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan on August 10.

* On the same day, the Olympic taekwondo team, including Nguyen Van Hung, Nguyen Thi Hoai and Tran Thi Ngoc Truc, left for Beijing in the hope of winning more medals for the country.

Nguyen Van Hung, who will compete in the men’s under-80kg category, is the most experienced athlete having participated in the last Olympics in Athens, where he failed to bring home a medal.

Meanwhile, Hung’s teammates Nguyen Thi Hoai and Tran Thi Ngoc Truc are also expected to perform well in their first Olympics Games.

The Taekwondo team will start their competition on August 20 at the Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium.
