At least 30 people, many of them women and children, are feared dead after a foot bridge spanning a river in north-eastern India collapsed.

At least 28 people were rescued from the Kameng River, in Arunachal Pradesh state, after the structure collapsed.

India news sources said a swift current was hindering efforts to rescue those who had fallen into the water.

The villagers were reportedly setting out to hunt when the suspension bridge structure gave way beneath them.

It was the second bridge collapse in India within a week.

Last week, some 32 people died and 132 were injured after a bridge collapsed at a political event in Darjeeling.
