Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has affirmed Vietnam’s determination to tighten the ties of solidarity and traditional friendship with Dominica.

At a reception for Secretary General of the United Left Movement of Dominica (MIU) Jose Miguel Mejia in Hanoi on February 20, Party leader Trong thanked the MIU and Dominican people for supporting Vietnam in the past struggle for national independence and the current process of national construction and defence.

Mr Trong expressed his belief that the MIU and the Dominican Progressive Movement will achieve ever greater victories in their just struggle for peace, national independence, democracy, progress and social justice.

The MIU Head praised the success of Vietnam’s 11th National Party Congress, the elections of deputies to the 13th National Assembly (NA) and People’s Councils at all levels last year, adding that he was very impressed by Vietnam’s tremendous achievements in the Doi Moi (Renewal) process.

Mr Mejia briefed the host on the latest situation in Dominica and activities of the MIU and the Left Movement of Latin America.

He said he will do his best to further strengthen the ties of friendship and time-honoured friendship, especially cooperation in economics, trade and investment to make Vietnam-Dominica relationship more substantial and effective in the future.

Earlier the same day, the Dominican delegation met with Head of the Party Central Committee’s External Relations Commission Hoang Binh Quan during which both sides informed each other about the situation in their respective countries and compared notes on issues of common concern and measures to enhance Party and diplomatic relations and boost cooperation in trade, mechanical engineering, telecommunications, tourism and oil and gas.

The delegation also worked with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, some relevant agencies and businesses on ways to strengthen bilateral relations in politics, economics, trade, culture and social affairs.
