Liem defeats Spanish rival in ninth match
(VOV) - Vietnamese chess grandmaster Le Quang Liem beat Spanish rival Renier Igarza Vazquez in his ninth match of Festival Tradewise Gibraltar 2013 in the UK on January 31.
Igarza (Elo 2565) had to accept his failure in the 96th move.
With a total of seven points after nine matches, Liem (Elo 2705) moved up to 4th position in the rankings.
There is high hope that he will win in the tenth match to enter the top three if Russia’s Nikita Vitiugov, the UK’s Nigel Short and France’s Maxime Vachier-Lagrave fail to gain more points.
The final match will take place four hours earlier than scheduled, at 5pm (local time) on January 31, to give the organizing board more time to prepare for the awards ceremony.
