Demonstrations in Europe in protest against TTIP
Thousands of people marched on streets in Europe on April 19 in protest against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), a planned free trade deal between Europe and the United States.
Opposition to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is particularly high in Germany.
In Munich, 23,000 people flocked to the streets while the numbers of demonstrators recorded in Leipzig, Stutgart, and Frankfurt were 2000, 1000, and 700.
Brussels saw 2,000 people took to the streets to oppose the agreement while hundreds of people did the same in Madrid, Helsinki, Warsaw, and Prague.
The move came as the US and EU officials are to resume negotiations on TTIP in New York on April 20. The agreement, once signed, could further reduce the existing low tax barriers between the EU and US, and harmonize regulations applied to several goods and services at unprecedented levels. European campaigners feared that companies would earn at consumers’ losses.
