The Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control has asked central and Central Highlands provinces to be well prepared for a tropical depression which is moving along the central coast and bringing heavy rain to the region.

At 13.00 on October 17, the depression was positioned at 13.4 degrees north latitude and 112.1 degrees east longitude, about 330 km east of the central coast. It was moving towards the north with winds gusting between 39-49km per hour near its centre.

In the next 24 hours, the depression is forecast to travel west and north-west at a speed of 5-10km and dump heavy rains on central and Central Highland provinces, including Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Dak Lak, Kon Tum, and Gia Lai. The national weather bureau has warned these provinces against flash floods and landslides in mountain and remote areas.

The Khanh Hoa provincial border guard command reported that it has made contact with 268 vessels with nearly 2,500 people on board still out at sea and one third of them have found the nearest storm shelters. It was working with the fisheries sector and families of vessel owners to contact the remainder and guide them to escape the danger areas.

The tropical depression also caused heavy downpours in many parts of Khanh Hoa province overnight. The provincial weather bureau warned that water levels in major rivers in Khanh Hoa will rise up to the second alert level on October 18.
