Senior citizens who have successfully run businesses were praised at a conference held in Hanoi on September 18 by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Elderly Association (VEA).

The event was attended 128 outstanding seniors and five collective units representing thousands of people who have made positive contributions to reducing poverty and promoting the movements launched by the VEA in the fields of agro-forestry, services and handicrafts.

Speaking at the two-day conference, VEA Chairman Nguyen Tan Trinh said that elderly people’s successful economic activities have not only helped to improve their own living conditions but also contributed to community development. Many of them participated in charitable programmes and granted aid to underprivileged people.

Mr Trinh went on to say that despite their old age, the elderly were very active and capable of running business effectively. They mobilised VND400-500 million in capital and generated jobs for thousands of workers.

Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, Huynh Dam, praised the efforts made by seniors in promoting the movements to build a cultural lifestyle in residential areas, support the poor and take care of the elderly. They have become bright examples for young generations to follow, he said.

On this occasion, the VEA will also organise a free medical check-up programme for the elderly.
