A national seminar on tight control of production, trading, import and export of Safrole-rich oil in the framework of the XAP/163 project opened in Hanoi on May 9. It was the Standing Office on Drug Control (SODC) of the Ministry of Public Security and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Present at the seminar were UNODC Chief Representative, Narumi Yamada, and Project Coordinator, Wong Hoy Yuen, officials and representatives from various Vietnamese ministries and organizations.

Wong Hoy Yuen said Vietnam does not produce Safrole-rich oil but imports and re-exports it. Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos and Myanmar are Safrole-rich oil producers. It is estimated that around 1,500 tonnes of Safrole-rich oil are produced in these countries.

Speaking at the seminar, SODC office manager Nguyen Cong Son said the seminar is a good opportunity for Vietnam’s management agencies to discuss measures to control drug precursor effectively. Vietnam’s active participation in regional projects on drug precursor control demonstrates the Government’s commitment to controlling drug precursor, Mr Son said.
