The Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) announced on July 2 that Vietnam is facing severe power shortages in July due to the high demand for electricity that is estimated to reach 7,152 million kWh.

Some big power plants run by the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) were recently separated from the electricity system. The Ca Mau 1 electricity plant with a capacity of 750 MW has stopped its operation since June 15.

In the meantime, the Ca Mau 2 power plant with a capacity of 750 MW is still on a trial run and the Nhon Trach 1 plant has just started running with one generator group (150 MW).

This is not to mention the failure of the extended Uong Bi thermal power plant to solve some technical problems over the past two weeks.

Although the EVN Group has mobilized all resources available, it is still unable to ensure a stable supply of electricity. With the daily use of about 230 million kWh (12,500-12,800 MW at rush hours) there is an impending danger of lacking 1,500-2,500 MW from 7am to 9pm.
