Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia have agreed to promote effective bilateral and multilateral cooperation towards the goal of a drug-free ASEAN by 2015.

The 11th tripartite bilateral ministerial conference on drug control cooperation between Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia closed in Laos on November 16.

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Lieutenant General and Deputy Minister of Public Security Pham Quy Ngo.

During the two-day conference, delegates reviewed the drug situation and the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on drug control cooperation signed by the three countries at the 10th conference in Cambodia.

Attendees compared notes, sharing information, approaches and measures to expand cooperation in controlling drug trafficking along the common border while emphasizing the importance of assistance and support from other countries and international organizations in raising public awareness about the negative effects of drugs.

They also asked the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to provide financial and technological assistance through projects to boost drug control cooperation in the three countries’ border areas.

Clear political commitments to dealing with drug-related issues and preventing the spread of drug in the region were also made by the participants.

At the conference, the Vietnamese delegation highlighted its drug control achievements and experiences in exchanging information and dealing with drug traffickers and other hot drug-related issues.

Vietnam signed the 2012 MoUs on drug control cooperation with Laos and Cambodia.

A joint statement was also released on the occasion to further boost tripartite cooperation between the countries.
