Bird flu has reared its ugly head again in Vietnam, with fresh outbreaks being discovered in four provinces since May 16, according to the Veterinary Department.

The virus has killed poultry, mostly unvaccinated ducklings, in the northern provinces of Quang Ninh, Son La and Nam Dinh and the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, reported the department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Scientists found the dead poultry positive for the bird flu virus strain H5N1.

The department has been quick to clamp down on the effected areas by culling flocks, disinfecting the areas and setting up quarantine checkpoints with the aim of containing the spread of the disease.

In early May, bird flu broke out and claimed 1, 300 ducks in Dien Chau district, central Nghe An province. However, the outbreak was quickly contained.
In an effort to eradicate the virus, 60 out of 64 provinces and cities nationwide have been conducting the first round of vaccinations for fowl this year.

Vietnam has not recorded a case of bird flu human transmission since the last one detected on November 14, 2005, according to the National Steering Committee on Bird Flu Prevention and Control.
