Malaysia's ruling coalition Barisan Nasional (BN), or National Front of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi, won the 12th general election, which was held on March 8, local media reported.

According to the results of 219 seats of the 222-seat Lower House of the Parliament announced by the Election Commission (EC) on March 9, the BN secured 137 seats, including eight won uncontested, far less than the two-thirds majority line of 148 seats.

 

The Keadilan Party (PKR) won 31 seats, the Democratic Action Party (DAP), 28, and the Islamic Party (PAS), 23.

 

In the 11th Parliament which was dissolved on February 13, the BN held 199 of the 219 seats in the Lower House.
