Quang Liem beats foreign chess prodigies at Skilling Open
VOV.VN - Despite missing out on a place in the quarter-finals of the Skilling Open rapid chess tournament, Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem left a positive impression at the event after overwhelming chess prodigies Hikaru Nakamura of the United States and Alireza Firouzja of Iran.
During the final day of the competition, Liem recorded a five game unbeaten run, including a in the 12th game draw against Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, the world’s leading player, along with a win over strong rival Alireza Firouzja of Iran in the 15th game.
He also beat chess prodigy Hikaru Nakamura of the US during the sixth game, the only match that the young American talent lost in the entire competition.
The Vietnamese player claimed eight points following 15 matches, equal to that of his opponents ranked from sixth to ninth place. Despite this strong showing, Liem was forced to withdraw from the competition due to tie-break points.
