Malaysia to elect new King

The Malaysian Conference of Rulers will hold a special meeting to elect the country’s 15th King on October 14.

According to the Conference’s election law, Ruler Muhammad V of Kelantan state will become the King of Malaysia for the next five years. 


The Conference of Rulers will consider some factors like the consent of the candidate as well as his health condition for the position. 

Under regulations, the selected will officially become the King of Malaysia if he receives at least five votes from nine rulers of Malay states. 

The similar procedure will be conducted to select the King’s deputy, who will take the place of the King in case of absence or illness. 

The current King of Malaysia is Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, 88, Ruler of Kedah state. He is the first person in the Malaysian history to hold the position twice, in 1970-1975 and 2011-2016. 

Malaysia’s King Election is held every five years. The Rulers of nine Malay states will take turn to be the King.
