WB readies to help Vietnam with infrastructure development
VOV.VN -World Bank (WB) Country Director for Vietnam Ousmane Dione has affirmed his organization’s willingness to help Vietnam develop infrastructure system, particularly transport infrastructure.
At their meeting in Hanoi on May 29, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung, Ministry of Transport officials, relevant ministries and agencies, and WB experts came up with solutions for mobilizing resources for and effectively carrying out projects to develop infrastructure, especially transport infrastructure.
Deputy PM Dung greatly appreciated WB support for Vietnam in infrastructure and socio-economic development, which has provided firm prerequisites for sustainable development.
Despite Vietnam having a strongly developed transport infrastructure, it lacks synchronous and high-quality infrastructure, and lax connectivity and unsuitable structure of means of transport.
Ousmane Dione said the WB is ready to help the Vietnamese Government work out a reasonable mechanism for the implementation of infrastructure projects.
The WB can also assist Vietnam in preparing projects, mobilizing official development assistance for some sections of the North-South expressway, and attracting private capital under the form of public-private partnership (PPP).
Deputy PM Dung shared WB specialists’ view on the need for the State to share investment risks under which the major focus should be on improving project quality and investment effectiveness.
He also urged the WB to consider inland waterway transport, particularly in the Mekong Delta, and rail transport in Vietnam, including helping the country to prepare for a North-South express train project.
With regard to the WB’s proposed technical support for some projects, Dung said with its experience, the WB will support the country in improving investment quality and efficiency.
