Vietnamese swindlers arrested in RoK

Three Vietnamese swindlers were apprehended in the Republic of Korea after they were determined to be among six people conning 37 Vietnamese expats out of US$137,000.

Detained by the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency’s International Crime Investigation, three Vietnamese women married to RoK men and a fourth suspect, a male, were granted bail while they await further investigation. The remaining two are still being detained.

The offenders advertised visa extensions and assistance to illegal residents in their documentation on social networks. The three Vietnamese women persuaded vulnerable respondents and were paid nearly US$500 for each case but never provided any of the promised services.

About 17,000 Vietnamese nationals are living illegally in the RoK. Recently, a number of social networks and Vietnamese forums have featured advertisements or classified ads with the same false promises.

Authorities have recommended the community raise its awareness of the fraudulent ads.
