Bird flu has been contained in Vietnam as no new outbreaks were detected across the country in the past 21 days, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) announced on February 13.

MARD officials attributed the success to drastic measures taken since bird flu’s recurrence in the Mekong River Delta last December. However, they urged continued vigilance, given that risks remain high throughout the country, particularly after the Lunar New Year Festival (Tet).

According to MARD’s Veterinary Department, no avian influenza cases have been discovered across the country over the past week. Many localities are busy giving poultry stocks additional vaccinations. It is estimated that as many as 14 million chickens and ducks have been vaccinated.

To prevent the recurrence of bird flu in the next week, officials said localities should tightly control the domestic fowl, continue the vaccination programme and raise public awareness about the dangers of bird flu and preventative measures.
