Ballet performed to mark 140 years of “Carmen” premiere

The ballet “Carmen” will be performed by artists of the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) at the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House on March 29 to mark the 140th anniversary of the premiere of the “Carmen” opera.

The ballet will star the HBSO’s top talents, including Nguyen Thu Trang, Ho Phi Diep, Dam Duc Nhuan, Dao Van Thien and Tran Hoang Yen, who performed the play in 2012.

When the opera “Carmen” premiered at the Opéra-Comique in France’s Paris in 1875, it received a lukewarm response from the public, gaining popularity only after the opera was staged in Vienna the same year and in London in 1878.

The ballet “Carmen”, which premiered in 1967, was crafted by Cuban choreographer Alberto Alonso on music taken from the opera and written by Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin.

Of French composer Georges Bizet’s 15 operas, “Carmen” is his most renowned and final work. He passed away suddenly at the age of 37, just three months after the opera premiered.

At the show on March 29, the audience will have a chance to enjoy excerpts from other famous Bizet operas performed by Meritorious Artist Hong Vy, Pham Trang and Tran Duy Linh. The orchestra will be conducted by prodigy Tran Nhat Minh.
