US Secretary of State chooses Vietnam as first destination in SEA

VOV.VN - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will make his first visit to Vietnam on July 8-9 ,and also to Southeast Asia after taking office as Secretary of State at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh.

The visit aims to enhance the comprehensive partnership between the two nations, especially in the key areas of politics, diplomacy, economy, trade, investment, defence, security, and in dealing with the aftermath of the war, said Foreign Ministry vice spokesperson Ngo Toan Thang at a regular press conference in Hanoi on July 5.

The trip takes place at a time when the comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and the US has grown in multiple fields, including trade and economy with last year's bilateral trade reaching US$51 billion.

The two sides are expected to compare notes on regional and international issues of shared concern. The US diplomat is to hold talks with his host and pay a courtesy call on other senior Vietnamese leaders.
