Vietnam has always ensured the implementation of international commitments on children's rights and considered it a priority in the country's socio-economic development strategy, said National Assembly Deputy Chairman Truong Quang Duoc.

The NA Deputy Chairman made the affirmation while receiving Deputy Managing Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Kul Gautam in Hanoi on March 27.

Since Vietnam joined the International Treaty on the Rights of the Child, the NA has promulgated the law on protection, care and education of children and distributed State budget in order to create a good environment for children growing up in Vietnam.

Mr Duoc told the UN representative that Vietnam prioritises children in isolated areas with the aim of creating equal opportunities for children in all stratums of society.

Kul Gautam highlighted the role of legislative bodies in implementing the rights of the child, saying that UNICEF is boosting cooperation with these agencies in various countries, including Vietnam. He recognised the Vietnam National Assembly’s efforts in this connection, especially in raising the awareness and capacity of local agencies to support legislation.

The UN official expressed his wish to increase UNICEF’s cooperation and influence in Vietnam and help to attract more investment in the area.
