The Government is considering the construction of a new expressway from Hanoi to Hai Phong in 2008 to avoid traffic congestion on National Highway No 5.

The new six-lane expressway, which is 100km long and 35 metre wide allows vehicles to run at a speed of 120km per hour.

The project will be carried out under BOT manner (Build-Operate-Transfer) and with total investment capital of around US$938 million sourced from individuals, not from the Japanese Government.

Apart from the new Hanoi-Hai Phong expressway, other projects are being studied for future implementation. Among them is the US$653 million project to build the Hanoi-Lao Cai expressway which will have four to six lanes and a total length of more than 260 km. Once approved, it will be divided into two phases of construction between now and 2010.

The second major project is the US$1,4 billion Hanoi-Lang Son expressway which will have six lanes and a total length of 140km. The third one is the US$425 million Ha Long-Mong Cai four-lane expressway with a total length of 170 km.
