The Israeli army launched air strikes on Wednesday on the Gaza Strip close to the border fence with Israel, killing two Palestinian gunmen reportedly from the militant group al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, according to Palestinian security officials.

An Israeli warplane fired a missile at the two men south of the former Kissufim crossing after a gun battle on the ground. Palestinian security officials said the gunmen were on their way to plant bombs.

Israel warned on Tuesday it would step up its bombardment of Gaza, despite the deaths of 16 Palestinians, including two children, in artillery attacks. Officials said the attacks aimed to stop militants firing rockets at Israel.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned that a serious humanitarian crisis will occur if western countries and the US maintain its decision to stop aid to Palestinians. He described the decision as “unreasonable” and “unfair”.
