Vietnam plans to establish a committee to monitoring engineers in accordance with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) standards.

The committee will be responsible for recognizing the professional skills and experience of Vietnamese engineers who want to register as an ASEAN-standardized professional engineer.

The Vietnamese Government will issue a legal document in 2008 regarding the setting up of the committee to ensure the standards and procedures for the registration follow international practices.

Vice General Secretary of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA), Pham Van Tan, said that the monitoring committee (MC) will be set up under the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) signed by the 10 ASEAN member countries in November 2005.

The MC will include seven members representing State management agencies, VUSTA and the craft associations operating in the technical field. The committee will compile the verification criteria and procedures used and submit them to the relevant State agencies and the ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer Coordinating Committee (ACPECC) for approval.

Vietnam now has 108 engineers who were recognized as ASEAN-standardized professional engineers after three pilot registrations in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

With the establishment of the committee, the number of ASEAN-standardized professional engineers from Vietnam will increase sharply over the coming years.
