The Vietnam-Laos Electricity Development and Investment Company is building the 250MW Sekaman 3 plant in Sekong province, which borders the central provinces of Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam and Kon Tum, at a cost of US$273 million.

Once completed in 2010, the plant will create jobs for locals and help increase transportation and trade between these provinces, said the Lao Economic and Trade Charge d'Affaires to Vietnam, Som Vang Nithavong.

The Electricity of Vietnam Group recently announced plans to buy 90 percent of all electricity generated by the plant, which has a design capacity of 1 billion kWh per year.

Som Vang Nithavong predicted that two-way trade between Laos and Vietnam would increase from the level of US$260 million recorded in 2006 to US$1 billion after Sekaman 3 becomes fully operational three years later.
